The number of trademark registrants in the first six months of the current fiscal year has reached 2,538. In the last one month alone, around 400 trademarks were registered with the Department of Industry.
Acquiring trademark from the department means getting legal rights for any business.
Dik Bahadur Karki, director of Industrial Property Branch under the Department, said that the number of trademark registrations has increased of late.
“It indicates that the industries and businessmen are seeking protection of their products and services from the government,” said Karki.
Among the trademarks registered in the department, most of the industries are related to business. Such a trademark can also be owned by companies and businessmen as well as non-profit oranisations. However, most of the trademarks registered during the review period were related to businessmen, says Karki.
He said that the number of trademarks issued has increased because of the department’s decision to approve the applications of around six to seven thousand that was halted in the past.
Stating that it used to take a year and a half to register a trademark in the past but now the registration process can be completed within six months.
Likewise, the department has received investment proposals worth Rs 136 billion including FDI proposals worth Rs 22 billion.
Altogether 211 industries including industries with domestic and foreign investments have been registered within the six months of current fiscal year.
Among them, 167 are small industries, 16 are middle-scale industries and 28 are large scale industries.
