Kathmandu, December 18 : The maintenance of runway and taxiway of Tribhuvan International Airport has been completed before the slated date. With it, the flights off and to TIA could be operated 21 hours every day.
The Chinese construction company, Aero Technology International Engineering Corporation, completed the maintenance before five months of the slated date. The company handed over the project to TIA authority on Tuesday.
The airport was renovated through the Air Transport Capacity Enhancement Project under the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN). The CAAN had made an agreement with the China National Aero Technology International Engineering Corporation to upgrade the runway at Rs 4.27 billion including VAT. All the works except for Airfield Light have been completed. The light related work is expected to finish within five days maximum, according to the Project.
The second phase of renovation had started last September by closing down the TIA for seven hours on a daily basis while the first phase of work relating to repair of the runway was conducted from April 1to June 30 early this year. The TIA’s runway measures 3,050 metre in length and 46 metre in width. TIA General Manager Devendra KC said the TIA now could be operative for 21 hours on a daily basis since the runway and taxiway related works were complete. RSS
