Kathmandu, September 19: Nepal is keen to strike a government-to-government (G2G) agreement with Qatar for sending its migrant workers to the Gulf state in the future.
According to media reports, in a meeting with Qatar’s ambassador to Nepal, Yousuf Mohmed Al-Hail held yesterday in the capital Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security Gokarna Bista came up with a proposal for such deal to ensure social security of the migrant workers.
During the meeting, Labor Minister Bista stated that increasing basic facilities for the Nepali migrant workers in Qatar is crucial to ensure insurance and social security policies for safer and dignified migration.
In his reply, Ambassador Al-Hail said that his country would take the proposal in positive light to ensure social security to the Nepali migrant workers. He also asked the Nepali side to start sending housemaids to Qatar pointing out their high demand.
Both Nepal and Qatar believe that the adoption of G2G agreement will help tide over anomalies like cheating and exploitation of Nepali workers in the Gulf state.
It is agreed that a group of experts from Nepal will visit Qatar to resolve technical issues for laying the grounds for sending the workers under such agreement.
