In accordance with the Statute of the GANHRI, the SCA has the mandate to consider and review applications for accreditation and reaccreditation. NHRC Nepal was assessed on the basis of its legislation, organizational structure, annual report and the detailed statement showing how it complies with the Paris Principles.

NHRC Nepal once again evokes all the human rights defenders, civil society members who have contributed for the establishment, autonomy and the independence of the Commission. The Commission is fully compliant with the principles relating to the status of national institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights (Paris Principles) and has been accredited with “A” status since its establishment, says a statement issued by the NHRC on Friday.

The SCA has also encouraged the NHRC Nepal to advocate for the appropriate amendment to its enabling law to allow direct tabling of its annual report before parliament, to strengthen its efforts to address all human rights violations, to advocate for appropriate amendments to its law in order to guarantee financial autonomy and to advocate for the appropriate amendment to its establishing law to address conflicts of interest.

During the reaccreditation process, OHCHR participated as a permanent observer and in its capacity as GANHRI Secretariat. In accordance with established procedures, regional networks of NHRIs were invited to attend as observers. NHRC Nepal also appreciates the participation of representatives from the Secretariats of the Asia-Pacific Forum (APF), the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI), the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) and the Network of National Human Rights Institutions of the Americas (RINDHCA), adds the statement.
