May 24: Construction of the ‘republic tower’ has been put in limbo following even more than a decade of establishment of a republic tower in the country dismantling 240 years old monarchy. Failure to manage budget even after all preparation has been made including the creation of the design of the project is to blame, said the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction.
For the project, Tribhuvan University has agreed to provide 60 ropanis of the land at Gangkhel of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-14 near the Office of Controller of Examinations in Balkhu following a decision of the Council of Ministers, said Macha Kaji Maharjan, a senior division engineer at the Department. The project cost is estimated to be Rs 1.87 billion.
Despite reports that there involves a dispute over the land provided for the project by the TU, there has not been any such dispute, said Shova Sapkota, chairperson of the KMC-14. According to the project design, the tower will be 94 meters in height.
The estimated height of the tower was reduced to 94 meters from 150. Meanwhile, construction of the Republic monument has been completed. The project location is in the northeast of Narayanhiti Durbar. President Bidya Devi Bhandari is scheduled to inaugurate the project on May 29 coinciding with the Republic Day. RSS
