The government has set the new price of sugarcane for the fiscal year 2081/82 BS at Rs 585 per quintal, marking an increase of Rs 20 per quintal from last year’s rate. While this increment offers some relief, it has sparked dissatisfaction among sugarcane farmers.
The Mahottari chapter of the Sugarcane Farmers’ Association expressed frustration, stating that the price adjustment does not proportionally reflect the rise in the cost of production and general commodities. Naresh Singh Kushwaha, the district president of the association, criticized the government for not consulting with key stakeholders, including sugar producers and farmers, before determining the new price.
This situation underscores ongoing challenges in the sugarcane farming sector, where farmers often face rising input costs without sufficient support or representation in policy decisions.
