The Nepali government’s recent advisory on foreign employment in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos highlights significant concerns regarding the safety and rights of Nepali workers in these countries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) issued a three-point travel advisory urging Nepali citizens to be cautious when traveling for employment opportunities. The advisory stressed the risks posed by human traffickers and unscrupulous employers who exploit migrant workers.
The MoFA warned Nepali nationals against falling victim to traffickers who promise high salaries but end up involving workers in illegal activities. Reports have surfaced about employers seizing passports, imposing grueling working hours (12-13 hours a day), subjecting workers to physical abuse, and withholding wages. The Ministry cautioned against traveling on a visit visa for employment purposes, emphasizing the importance of being properly informed about the companies they plan to work for. Nepali citizens are advised to verify employment opportunities through Nepali embassies and official channels, as well as check the legitimacy of foreign employers by visiting their websites.
