The inflow of tourists to Nepal declined by 18.3 percent in September, largely due to the impact of the Gen Z movement and the subsequent vandalism and arson incidents that occurred on September 8–9.

According to the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), the country welcomed 78,711 tourists via air in September, compared to 96,302 during the same month last year.

Autumn, spanning from September to November, is one of Nepal’s peak tourist seasons, favored for its pleasant weather, clear mountain views, sightseeing, and cultural experiences. However, this year, the political unrest and instability discouraged many travelers. Tourism entrepreneurs reported that numerous visitors canceled their bookings following the widespread disturbances caused by the Gen Z movement.

Of the total visitors, 15,556 (19.8%) were from India, followed by 9,679 from the USA, 6,824 from Australia, 5,237 from China, and 4,981 from the UK.

Region-wise, 24,258 tourists arrived from SAARC countries, 12,523 from other Asian nations, 16,597 from Europe, 11,523 from North America, and 7,314 from ASEAN countries.

Tourism stakeholders have expressed concern that the ongoing uncertainty could further hamper arrivals in the upcoming months, especially during what is traditionally Nepal’s most vibrant travel season.
