The Gen-Z protests of September 8 and 9 caused massive nationwide disruption, resulting in 2,353 job losses and physical damage worth Rs 84.45 billion, according to a government assessment.

A committee formed to evaluate the losses submitted its report to Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Thursday. The summary was presented at the Cabinet meeting by Committee Coordinator and National Planning Commission Secretary Rabi Lal Pantha.

Widespread Impact Across the Country

According to the report:

  • Employment of 2,999 people was affected.
  • Goods and services worth Rs 13.84 billion were disrupted.
  • Damage was recorded in all seven provinces, across 54 districts and 262 local levels.

Human Casualties

The protests resulted in:

  • 77 deaths
    • 20 on September 8
    • 37 on September 9
    • 20 in the following days
  • 2,429 injured, including:
    • 17 children under 13
    • 1,433 individuals aged 13–28

Breakdown of Losses

The total physical damage of Rs 84.45 billion includes:

  • 2,671 damaged buildings → Rs 39.31 billion
  • 12,659 damaged vehicles → Rs 12.93 billion
  • Damage to 2,168 institutions
  • Government and public sector losses → Rs 44.93 billion
  • Private sector losses → Rs 33.54 billion
  • Community and other sectors → Rs 5.97 billion

Among government losses:

  • Federal level: 68%
  • Provincial level: 10%
  • Local level: 22%

Reconstruction Plan

The committee proposed a Rs 36.30 billion reconstruction plan, including:

  • Rs 19.98 billion for rebuilding buildings
  • Rs 6.16 billion for vehicles
  • Rs 10.14 billion for other infrastructure

Estimated reconstruction distribution:

  • Federal level: Rs 24.69 billion
  • Provincial level: Rs 3.74 billion
  • Local level: Rs 7.86 billion

The report was prepared within the committee’s 75-day mandate and provides the first comprehensive picture of the financial, human, and structural impact of the protests.
