In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Department urged all concerned stakeholders to curb unnecessary price hikes and help maintain a competitive and fair market system. “Major producers, importers and distributors of food grains and oil are instructed to supply their goods and services without seeking unfair profits and to provide relief to consumers by addressing the unnatural price rise,” the statement said.

The Department noted that its attention had been drawn to numerous consumer complaints and media reports regarding abnormal price increases and supply shortages of essential commodities, including edible oil, cooking gas and staple rice.

It emphasised that consumers’ rights to receive quality goods and services, as guaranteed under the Consumer Protection Act, 2075 BS, and the Consumer Protection Regulations, 2076 BS, will be ensured through all necessary measures.

To this end, the Department has intensified joint market monitoring to inspect producers, sellers, importers, stockpilers and service providers involved in the supply of essential and daily consumable goods across the country.
