The government has begun preparations to increase public transport fares within the next two weeks, citing a sharp rise in fuel prices.
According to the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, a proposal has already been submitted to revise fares using the established scientific mechanism. Under this system, fares are automatically adjusted when fuel prices fluctuate by 15 percent.
The last fare hike was implemented on April 8, when public vehicle fares were increased by up to 22 percent. Passenger fares rose by 16.71 percent, while freight charges went up by 21.68 percent in hilly regions and 15.75 percent in the Terai.
Since that revision, diesel prices have surged by 30 percent. The cost of diesel has climbed by Rs 55, bringing the current price to Rs 237 per liter.
