Kathmandu, June 20 : The second joint steering committee (JSC) meeting on energy cooperation between Nepal and Bangladesh has begun in Dhaka from today.
The signing of the agreement pertaining to energy cooperation between the two nations in August last year paved the way for the conduct of this two-day meeting. The first such meeting had taken place in Nepal.
According to media reports, a seven-member team of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation (MoEWRI) is participating in the JSC meeting. The Nepali team is led by MoE- WRI Secretary Dinesh Kumar Ghimire.
Nepal and Bangladesh have been increasingly inclined towards bolstering their mutual cooperation and collaboration in the energy sector especially after the signing of Power Trade Agreement (PTA) with India in 2014.
In fact, the two countries have already agreed to cooperate in a number of areas like electricity generation, development of hydroelectricity, cross-border transmission lines, promotion of government-to-government and private sector investments, grid connectivity, and investment in renewable energy, among others.
Notably, Bangladesh is planning to buy 9,000 MW of electricity from Nepal by 2040.
