‘Nepalese Economy in Disarray: The Policies and Politics of Development’ unveiled

Kathmandu, October 1: A book ‘Nepalese Economy in Disarray: The Politics and Politics of Development’ has been released amidst a programme in the capital on Monday. The book has offered a comprehensive analysis of practices made so far on the economic development of the country and the perspectives of the governments and political parties on it.

Niti Foundation Chair Mohan Das Manandhar, National Planning Commission’s former member Dr Pushkar Bajracharya and trade economist Rojan Bajracharya authored the book. Nepali Congress leader Prakash Man Singh, NPC vice-chair Dr Pushpa Raj Kandel, NPC former vice-chair Prithvi Raj Legal and political analyst CK Lal jointly launched the book.

On the occasion, NC leader Singh said through supreme leader Ganesh Man Singh had envisioned advancing the economic agendas with the reinstatement of democracy in 2046 BS people could not feel the change with the governments failing to come up with plans and programmes accordingly.

“Despite several political changes int eh country the people did not improvements in their lives for no economic revolution, It sometimes had paved the way for rebellion”, he added. NPC Vice-chair Dr Kandel said the 15th periodic plan has set 10 overarching goals to take the country to the path of prosperity. NPC former vice-chair Legal stressed the need to forge political consensus for economic development. Political analyst CK Lal said the concept of development has emerged after the Second World War and it was observed with trade following the cold war since 1990.

Prosperity could not be achieved without the advancement of skills and technology, he added. Saying prosperity is not only economic growth, but it is also social justice and economic transformation, book author Manandhar stressed the need for shared participation of stakeholders with a clear vision on what is prosperity and how to attain it. Similarly, another author Dr Puskar Bajracharya said that the plans and programs brought by governments formed before and after 1990 failed to yield results due to lack of clear dimension of the country’s economic prosperity.

Stressing the need for making markets competitive without controlling it for the development of the country, another author Rojan Bajracharya viewed that investment made in infrastructure is the foundation for prosperity. The book has reflected the economic condition of the country before and after 2046 BS, progress made in different sectors including agriculture, industrialization, market, tourism, road, hydropower and communications.
