Finance Minister Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat clarified that the salaries of civil servants and social security allowances will not be increased. He indicated that the salaries and social security allowance cannot be increased this year as the country’s economy is facing a crisis, revenue collection is low and the resources with the government are limited.

However, he clarified that there is no plan to reduce the social security allowances, either. “Some suspicions have been raised about social security; the social security allowances will not be decreased,” he said.

Currently, more than 3.5 million Nepali citizens are in the scope of various social security allowances. At a time when the pressure to review the social security allowance is increasing, Finance Minister Dr Mahat clarified that it cannot be increased and there is no possibility of reducing it, either.
