Nepal’s ready-made garment exports soar to over 9 billion rupees

Nepal exported ready-made garments worth more than Rs 9 billion in the first nine months of the current fiscal year 2023/24. According to the statistics of the Department of Customs, the country esports 12.832 million pieces of ready-made garments worth Rs 9.28 billion from July to mid-March of current FY.

Ready-made clothing plays a big role in reducing Nepal’s foreign trade deficit. Nepal has been exporting ready-made garments worth billions of rupees to various countries of the world. According to the statistics of the department, the export of ready-made garments increased by 7 percent during the nine months of the current year compared to the last fiscal year. During the nine months of last year, Nepal exported 10.185 million pieces of ready-made garments worth Rs 8.419 billion.

Ready-made garments produced by Nepal are mostly exported to Germany, America and the UK. During the nine months of the current year, Nepal exported 1.139 million pieces of ready-made garments worth Rs 1.7426 billion to Germany. Similarly, 3.02 million pieces of ready-made garments worth Rs 1.6745 billion have been exported to America. According to the department, 1.595 million pieces of garment worth Rs 1.299 billion were exported to Britain.

Similarly, in the review period, Nepal sold 419000 pieces of garments worth Rs 217.7 million to Australia, 147000 pieces worth Rs 148.5 million to Austria, 33000 pieces worth Rs 398 million to Belgium, 50000 pieces worth Rs 9.8 million to Bhutan, 5000 pieces worth Rs 1.2 million to Brazil, 5000 pieces worth Rs 2.9 million to Bulgaria and 408,000 pieces worth Rs 312.8 million to Canada.

Similarly, 2.181 million pieces of garment worth Rs 133.3 million were exported to China, 3000 pieces worth Rs 1.5 million to Croatia, 1.22 million pieces worth Rs 93 million to the Czech Republic, 1.11 million pieces worth Rs 169.7 million to Denmark, 23,000 pieces worth Rs 3.1 million to Estonia, 22,000 pieces worth Rs 29.2 million to Finland, 390,000 pieces worth Rs 804.8 million to France and 14,000 pieces worth Rs 4.3 million to Georgia.

In addition, Nepal sold 5,500 pieces of ready-made garments worth Rs 7.2 million to Greece, 181,000 pieces worth Rs 21.5 million to Hong Kong, 39,000 pieces worth Rs 31.1 million to Hungary, 530,000 pieces worth Rs 253.4 million to India, 76,000 pieces worth Rs 71.6 million to Ireland, 5,000 pieces worth Rs 1.8 million to Israel, 223,000 pieces worth Rs 391.3 million to Italy, 628,000 pieces worth Rs 393.2 million to Japan, 23,000 pieces worth Rs 32.2 million to South Korea, 370 pieces worth Rs 6.1 million to Latvia, 30,000 pieces worth Rs 20.9 million to Malaysia, 1600 pieces worth Rs 2.1 million to Mauritius, 299,000 pieces worth Rs 241 million to the Netherlands, 40,000 pieces worth Rs 341 million to New Zealand, 49,000 pieces worth Rs 75.4 million to Norway and 59,000 pieces of ready-made garments worth Rs 37 million to Poland.

According to the department, in the review period, Nepal exported 33,000 pieces of garment worth Rs 25.1 million to Portugal. Likewise, Nepal exported ready-made garments worth Rs 4.2 million to Qatar, Rs 2.2 million to Singapore, Rs 40 million rupees to Slovakia and Slovenia, Rs 50.1 million to South Africa, and Rs 191.6 million rupees to Spain. It also exported ready-made garments worth Rs 80 million to Sweden, Rs 198 million to Switzerland, Rs 21.2 million to Taiwan, Rs 16 million to Thailand and Rs 46.3 million to the UAE.
