The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Government of Nepal, UNICEF, and UN Women, has launched a new initiative to enhance earthquake preparedness in Nepal. The two-year SUPER II project, funded by the European Union with USD 2.68 million (EUR 2.56 million), aims to build resilience for over 500,000 people in the Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, with a particular focus on marginalized communities.

As outlined in a press release from UNDP, the initiative targets urban areas, specifically Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi, and Birendranagar. This project follows the SUPER I project (2021-2024) and seeks to expand earthquake response capabilities while improving coordination between local and federal disaster risk management systems.

European Union Ambassador to Nepal, Veronique Lorenzo, highlighted the EU’s commitment to disaster preparedness, noting that this collaboration will enhance the ability of communities and authorities to respond effectively to disasters.

UNDP indicates that the project will engage provincial governments, municipalities, and local organizations, with backing from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. Kyoko Yokosuka, UNDP Nepal Resident Representative, expressed appreciation to the EU for its support of these crucial disaster preparedness efforts.
