The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has reported a profit of Rs 11.36 billion in the first six months of the current fiscal year, with electricity sales generating Rs 53.18 billion.

During this period, the NEA earned a total of Rs 70.44 billion from electricity sales, interest, and other sources. Meanwhile, its expenditures reached Rs 59.08 billion, covering electricity purchases, administrative costs, and various infrastructure projects.

By mid-January, the NEA’s profit before tax stood at Rs 11.36 billion. The authority is utilizing these earnings to expand and strengthen infrastructure related to electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and electrification projects.

In the first half of the fiscal year, the NEA paid Rs 34.84 billion to subsidiaries, affiliated companies, and private producers for electricity purchases. Additionally, it spent Rs 1.65 billion on importing 242 million units of electricity from India.

From mid-July to mid-January, the NEA exported 1.77 billion units of electricity to India, generating Rs 13.9 billion in revenue. However, as winter set in, it began importing electricity from India to meet domestic demand.

The NEA also allocated Rs 13.35 billion for various development and electrification projects, funded by government and foreign aid.

The NEA, which suffered a loss of Rs 8.89 billion in the fiscal year 2015/16, has consistently recorded profits in subsequent years. Last year, it posted a profit of Rs 14.46 billion.
