Nepal’s total foreign trade reached Rs 1,692 billion in the first ten months of the current fiscal year (FY) 2024/25, marking an 18.37 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to the Department of Customs (DoC). During the corresponding period last fiscal year, total trade stood at Rs 1,429.53 billion.
The growth in foreign trade was driven by increases in both imports and exports. Imports accounted for 87.12 percent of total trade, while exports contributed 12.88 percent. This trade pattern has resulted in a trade deficit of Rs 1,256 billion, up from Rs 1.18 trillion in the same period last year.
Goods worth Rs 1,474.1 billion were imported between mid-July and mid-April, a 13.11 percent rise from Rs 1,334 billion in the same period last fiscal year. Meanwhile, Nepal’s exports surged by 72.71 percent, reaching Rs 217.91 billion, up from Rs 126.17 billion last year.
Despite the sharp increase in exports, the country continues to grapple with a widening trade deficit due to its heavy reliance on imports.
