The Sunkoshi Marin Diversion Multipurpose Project in Sindhuli has reached a major milestone with the completion of its 13.2-kilometer tunnel. Following this achievement, Minister of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Deepak Khadka, has instructed the contractor to accelerate the construction of the project’s headworks to ensure timely completion.
During his recent inspection of the site—including the tunnel, powerhouse, and headworks—Minister Khadka emphasized the importance of following a clear construction plan and meeting set objectives. The project, once completed, is expected to provide 10% of the country’s drinking water supply, generate 32 megawatts of electricity, and irrigate 122,000 hectares of agricultural land.
Sanjeeb Baral, Director General of the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation, also expressed concern over delays. While 50% of the headworks were expected to be completed by now, only 19% has been achieved. He urged the contractor to accelerate progress and warned that failure to do so may result in contract termination. Of the Rs 14 billion allocated for the project, Rs 1.20 billion has already been mobilized.
In response, Raman Patel, a representative of Raman Construction, acknowledged delays due to pending payments from the department but assured that the project could still be completed on schedule with proper government support.
The inspection was also attended by Joint Secretary Sushil Chandra Acharya, Mitra Baral, and other ministry officials, reflecting the government’s commitment to pushing forward with this vital infrastructure project.
