Empty containers have begun moving from Rasuwagadhi to Kerung in China to bring Chinese goods into Nepal, even though imports through the northern border are still suspended following the recent election.
Earlier, imports were halted from February 18 to March 1 due to the Chinese New Year. Since then, goods have not entered Nepal through the Kerung checkpoint because of the Holi festival and the election, according to officials.
The Rasuwa Customs Office reported that imports have not yet resumed after the election. Meanwhile, around 100 to 150 empty containers have already been sent toward Kerung to collect goods.
Authorities have also announced that the Syafrubesi–Rasuwagadhi road will remain closed from April 1 to April 15 for upgrading work. Officials warned that containers sent to bring goods could become stranded on the Chinese side if they do not return before the road closure.
This time of year usually sees increased imports of summer goods from China. Before the election, more than 30 containers of goods were entering Nepal each day through the Kerung checkpoint.
