Nepal imported goods worth around Rs 1.6 trillion during the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, with diesel and crude soybean oil emerging as the country’s largest import items, according to the Department of Customs.

During the review period, Nepal imported 1.144 million kilolitres of diesel worth Rs 130 billion. Crude soybean oil ranked second, with imports reaching 655.6 million litres valued at Rs 106 billion.

The country also imported 1.10 billion kilograms of sponge iron worth Rs 48 billion. Imports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) totaled 443.1 million kilograms worth Rs 46.13 billion, while 1.863 million smartphones valued at Rs 39.39 billion were brought into the country.

Gold imports stood at 1,354 kilograms worth Rs 25.78 billion.

In comparison, during the same period of the previous fiscal year, Nepal had imported diesel worth Rs 102 billion amounting to 1.147 million kilolitres. Crude soybean oil imports had reached Rs 81.89 billion for 539.5 million litres.

Similarly, petrol imports during the corresponding period last year stood at Rs 53 billion for 612,000 kilolitres, while LPG imports amounted to Rs 51.81 billion for 456.8 million kilograms.
