Hydel projects seek approval for 2.5k MW of electricity

Hydropower ventures with potential of generating over 2,500 megawatts of electricity have completed their feasibility studies and have submitted applications to the Department of Electricity Development seeking approval to move ahead with the process of electricity generation.

A total of 18 projects, both private and government, spread across various regions of the country have sought approval for electricity production. These 18 ventures have collectively proposed generating 2,627.96 megawatts of electricity. These projects range from 900 kilowatts to the substantial 1,902-megawatt Mugu Karnali Storage Project, which stands as the largest among the applicants. This project, with its study concluded, submitted an application seeking permit for production on July 29.

Another notable application is from Samriddhi Energy Limited, seeking approval for the 216 MW Bajhang Upper Seti Project. The project completed its study on August 31. Additionally, the Department of Electricity Development’s website lists applications from several other projects, including the 270 MW Bheri-1, 43.2 MW Chilun River, 35.150 MW Upper Apsuwa, and 40 MW Upper Sankhuwa river hydropower ventures.

The 40 MW Ikhuwa River Hydropower Project has also submitted application for production permits, highlighting the growing interest and commitment to clean energy development in Nepal.
