The government has decided to extend the ban on the import of various commodities till mid-December.
The cabinet meeting held on Thursday took the decision on the proposal of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies.
The government has banned the import of motor vehicles, liquors, mobile phones costing more than $300 and motorbikes having more than 150cc displacement. The government’s fresh decision means these goods cannot be imported into the country till mid-December.
Earlier, the government had prohibited the import of these four goods till mid-October.
The government put a ban on the import of 10 different goods on April 26 to arrest the depletion of foreign exchange reserve. However, it resumed import of 10 goods – diamonds, television sets larger than 32 inches, toys, cards and snacks – in August, citing Dashain festival.
