Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation Minister Sudan Kirati has sought an explanation from Pradeep Adhikari, the director general (DG) of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).
Minister Kirati handed over a detailed letter comprising nine points, seeking clarification from the DG Adhikari. In the letter, the minister has raised questions regarding the Director General’s public statements that apparently contradict the government’s policies and program, despite the budget and program for the current fiscal year clearly stating that CAAN will be separated into a regulatory body and a service provider body (point 101).
Highlighting the fact that CAAN is facing challenges in operating regular flights at the Bhairahawa and Pokhara airports, which were constructed using loans from donor agencies, Minister Kirati asked why the DG does not acknowledge the weaknesses in CAAN’s operational capacity as the main authority responsible for airport operations.
Furthermore, Minister Kirati has expressed concerns over the incidents of two Nepali registered planes and three helicopters crashing during DG Adhikari’s tenure. He questioned the effectiveness of DG Adhikari’s duties and responsibilities in ensuring aviation security.
The letter seeks a detailed explanation from the director general in response to these pressing issues.
