With India tightening its border entry and exit points due to ongoing elections, the illegal import of eggs into Nepal has come to a halt. As a result, egg prices in Nepal have sharply increased starting today.

According to the new price list issued by the Nepal Layers Poultry Breeders Association, retail prices have been adjusted as follows:

  • Extra Large (XL): Rs 520 per crate (30 eggs)
  • Large: Rs 505 per crate
  • Medium: Rs 490 per crate

Association President Binod Pokharel stated that this marks an increase of Rs 55 per crate compared to previous rates. He noted that Nepali eggs have finally reached their cost price after the cessation of illegal egg imports from India. Due to stricter border checks during the Indian elections, such smuggling has now been stopped.

The production cost of one egg in Nepal is Rs 16.57, and consumption generally rises in the winter season, further boosting demand.

Three months ago, the price of XL eggs had reached Rs 530 per crate, but later declined to Rs 400. The latest increase allows farmers to at least recover their production costs.

Nepal currently produces an estimated 4 million eggs per day.
