The government has paid Rs 766.142 million to the farmers of eight districts who have given sugarcane to various sugar mills.
The 10 sugar industries that came into operation last year had crushed 11.94 million quintals of sugarcane. According to Prakash Sanjel, spokesperson of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, the government has deposited Rs.
Out of the amount sent to the Treasury and Accounts Control Office, only Rs. 766.142 million has been sent to the farmer’s account. The remaining amount is in the Fund and Accounts Control Office.
The ministry has stated that additional amount will be sent to the farmers’ account as the details of the farmers who crushed sugarcane last year are coming.
It is seen that more than Rs. 60 million will be saved from the budget allocated for subsidizing sugarcane farmers last year. The government has been sending the grant money to the sugarcane farmer’s account for the last two years.
Earlier, the government used to send subsidy money to the account of the concerned industry and send the amount to the account of the farmer based on the amount of sugarcane crushed by the industrialist. However, the government has started sending money to the farmers’ accounts after it was found that many industrialists had committed irregularities without giving money to the farmers.
This year, the government has fixed the support price at Rs. 590 per quintal, providing a government subsidy of Rs. 70 per quintal to sugarcane farmers.
Spokesperson of the Ministry of Agriculture Sanjel said that after the completion of this year’s sugarcane crushing, data will be received from the district administration office through the sugar industry and the amount of subsidy to be distributed to the farmers will be decided on the same basis.
The Ministry of Agriculture has issued a public notice to sugarcane farmers across the country to submit details at their local level to get government subsidy.
