Nepal imported 5,578 kg of gold in the fiscal year 2021/22, which gave the government a revenue of Rs 4.40 billion.
According to the Department of Customs, an import of the aforementioned amount of gold was recorded to enter the country via the Tribhuvan International Airport. During the one month period from mid-August to mid-September, 783 kg of gold was imported, the largest of the monthly average of the last year.
The import of gold went into a falling graph after the government imposed restrictions on the import of a number of luxury items including gold, citing the depleting foreign currency reserves. However, during mid-June and mid-July, the last month of the fiscal year 2021/22, the gold import surged to 449 kg, which gave the government a revenue of Rs 386.18 million in the particular month.
