May 21: Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Gokarna Bista has stressed the need for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to play a constructive role in enforcing ‘equal pay for equal work’ across the globe.
ILO can create an environment wherein employers provide salaries and facilities to foreign workers in proportion to that received by the employees of the destination country, he said speaking at a programme with the theme of ‘work for bright future’ organised here on Monday (May 20) on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the ILO.
“Nepali migrant workers are being denied salaries and facilities in proportion to that received by the workers of the destination countries. There should not be any disparity in salaries and facilities for the same jobs and the same working hours. ILO must take steps in this regard,” he said.
Pledging to provide salaries and facilities to foreign workers in Nepal on a par with Nepali workers, he made a commitment that there would not be any discrimination between Nepali citizens and foreign nationals. Saying there was a big challenge to connect educated unemployed people to jobs, he said the government was at work to create job opportunities for at least 500,000 Nepalis in the coming fiscal year.
