Nepal imported 5,480 electric four-wheelers in the first half of the fiscal year 2024/25, with a total import value of Rs 13.19 billion. According to the Department of Customs, the government collected Rs 811.62 million in customs revenue from these imports.

Electric vehicles (EVs) with a capacity of 51-100 kW dominated the market, accounting for 3,191 units valued at Rs 7.97 billion and contributing Rs 545.3 million in customs revenue. Vehicles below 50 kW followed, with 1,725 units imported at a value of Rs 3.11 billion, generating Rs 131.6 million in revenue.

In the 101-200 kW category, 553 vehicles were imported, worth Rs 1.95 billion and contributing Rs 165.9 million in customs revenue. Higher-capacity vehicles saw limited imports, with just nine units in the 201-300 kW range and two units exceeding 300 kW, collectively contributing Rs 18.5 million in revenue.

The data reflects a growing preference for mid-range EVs, particularly in the 51-100 kW category. Analysts consider this trend a positive sign for Nepal’s EV market.

Although the number of EVs imported increased by a modest 7% compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year, customs revenue surged by 44%. The 101-200 kW segment alone contributed a 25% rise in revenue, driven by a staggering 713% increase in imports within this category.

In the first half of 2024/25, 553 EVs in the 101-200 kW range were imported, compared to just 68 in the same period of 2023/24. This sharp rise boosted excise duty collections from Rs 246 million to Rs 1.65 billion—a 574% increase.

Overall, the government collected Rs 8.162 billion in customs revenue from EV imports in the first half of 2024/25, compared to Rs 5.67 billion in 2023/24. This represents an increase of Rs 2.492 billion, with the 101-200 kW category contributing more than 56% of the growth (Rs 1.413 billion).

While EVs in the 51-100 kW segment remained the most imported, higher-capacity categories (201-300 kW and above) saw significantly fewer imports, collectively adding Rs 18.5 million to revenue.
