A new trekking route to Tilicho Lake has recently been launched, making it even more accessible. Situated at 4,919 meters above sea level in the Manang district, Tilicho Lake is renowned as the highest lake in the world.
The new trail starts from Jomsom in the Mustang district and leads to the lake via Thini in Gharpojhong Rural Municipality-5, replacing the previous route that originated from Chame and passed through Khangsar.
Mohan Singh Lalchan, Chairperson of Gharapjhong Rural Municipality, announced that domestic tourists have begun trekking to Tilicho Lake from Jomsom, passing through Namakhu Lake, Nilgiri Icefall, Chema Tal, and Masokondo Pass.
The new footpath was developed with support from the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), with the local government allocating Rs 5 million and ACAP contributing Rs 1 million.
Chairperson Lalchan noted that trekkers can reach Tilicho Lake and return within two days. The natural reservoir is just a two-hour drive from Jomsom and requires a six-hour trek along the new trail.
Trekkers should be aware that there are no hotels or restaurants along this route, so they will need to arrange their own meals and accommodations.
Tula Buda Magar from Myagdi district recently hiked to Tilicho Lake via the new trail. He shared, “It took me an hour on foot from Mesokondo Pass to reach there. The exhaustion from the uphill trek vanished when I saw the stunning, crystal-clear waters of the lake.”
The new trail also features informative signboards, according to Pramod Raj Regmi of ACAP in Jomsom.
