The BP Highway section in Nepal’s Kavrepalanchowk district will remain closed to vehicles every night from 5 PM to 5 AM for the next month due to heightened risks of floods and landslides during the monsoon season. This restriction, enforced by the District Administration Office (DAO) Kavrepalanchowk, applies from Kavre Bhanjyang to Nepal Thok near the Sindhuli border. The decision follows increasing incidents of road blockages from recent landslides—just last week, the highway was obstructed four times due to such disasters.
Previously, an inter-district coordination meeting among officials from Kavrepalanchok, Sindhuli, and Ramechhap had enforced a similar restriction from June 21, initially for 15 days, later extended till mid-July. Vehicles from Kathmandu are being stopped at Kavre Bhanjyang, while those coming from the east are halted at Nepal Thok or Khurkot, Sindhuli.
The BP Highway, stretching 160 kilometers, is a vital transport route linking eastern Nepal to Kathmandu. Its third (Khurkot to Nepal Thok) and fourth (Nepal Thok to Dhulikhel) sections—together covering 84 kilometers—have faced the worst damage in recent years. During last September’s flood, a massive eight-kilometer portion was washed away, forcing the government to build a temporary diversion. Now, the government has begun contracting work for permanent reconstruction in four separate packages to restore the damaged road sections.
This crucial highway sees thousands of vehicles daily, and the night-time restriction aims to minimize the risks to travelers during the dangerous monsoon period.
