NTC disseminating early warning information on natural disaster

July 10: Nepal Telecom (NTC) is devising special measure in disseminating early warning information on the possible natural disaster to reduce the loss of lives and properties from flood and landslide occurring in different parts of the country. Nepal Telecom in collaboration with the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has been sending security alert texts via cellular phone to the people of natural disaster-prone areas.

Recently the Telecom has suggested denizens residing in the vulnerable areas to remain cautious of rising water currents in the nearby rivers across the country. Early warning information will be shared to the targeted people keeping in mind the possible incidents of landslides in hilly area and inundation in Terai with the rise in rainfalls. Precautionary mobile messages are being delivered to the vulnerable population on potential climate hazards as part of the collaboration between NTC and the department.

A mechanism has been set to disseminate prior-information related to disaster to the NTC users residing in the vicinity of Mahakali, western Rapti, Kankai, Babi, Karnali, Narayani, Bagmati, Koshi rivers as well as in mountainous areas. NTC has been providing details of its users of the vulnerable areas to the department for the purpose of early warning information flow.

The department is sending bulk SMS to the people of possible disaster-hit areas prior to the occurrence of natural calamities. The intervention is delivered to reduce potential loss of lives and properties. RSS
