The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) under the parliament has called on the government to take immediate measures to control the surge in cement prices. The committee’s intervention follows widespread criticism over the sudden and significant price hike. During its meeting on Wednesday, the PAC instructed the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies to investigate the issue thoroughly and take appropriate action.
In addition, the PAC emphasized the need for the government to implement pricing strategies to regulate and regularly monitor the cost of goods and services. The committee also directed the Ministry of Energy to provide details on load-shedding affecting the cement industry.
At the meeting, Damodar Bhandari, Minister for Industry, Commerce, and Supplies, explained that unannounced load-shedding had contributed to a decline in cement production, which may have played a role in the price increase. He assured the committee that the ministry would collaborate with cement manufacturers and construction sector stakeholders to address the situation.
Rabi Singh, president of the Federation of Contractors’ Associations of Nepal, accused the government of complicity in the price hike and warned that unless swift action is taken, the prices will continue to climb.
