A cabinet meeting held on Friday decided to hike the price by Rs 9 per liter, taking the price to Rs 65 per liter, according to cabinet sources.

“There has been a decision to increase the price that farmers will get by Rs 9 per liter. This has taken the price to Rs 65 per liter,” said the cabinet source.

Government officials said that the price hike will directly benefit farmers as they will get the price that has been hiked this time. The state-owned Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) will now determine the price of other dairy products as per the new price.

The latest hike in the price of milk has raised concerns among people that even milk will be beyond the access of ordinary people. Earlier, the then Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government on February 10, 2022 had decided to increase the price of milk per liter by Rs 6 to Rs 14.

Rights activists have alleged that the government chose to hike the price of milk itself at the expense of the welfare of consumers instead of working to reduce the production cost of the milk.

Earlier, the National Dairy Development Board and dairy entrepreneurs had recommended the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to increase the price of milk by Rs 10 per liter. The ministry had submitted the proposal to the cabinet for approval a few days ago.
