The frequency of QR-based digital transactions in Nepal has increased nearly threefold over the past two years, reflecting the growing adoption of digital payments for everyday economic activities.
According to records from Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), a total of 72,438,302 QR-based transactions were recorded during the one-month period from mid-July to mid-August this year. The figure stood at 40,236,413 during the same period last year and 20,825,615 two years ago.
The data shows that the number of QR transactions increased by more than 50 million over the two-year period, highlighting the rapid expansion of digital payment services in the country.
The growing use of QR payments has been supported by their increasing availability across shops, restaurants, retail outlets, public transportation and various service providers. Consumers are increasingly using QR codes for small and routine payments, reducing their reliance on cash.
In the first month of the current fiscal year alone, transactions worth Rs 164.42 billion were conducted through QR-based payment systems.
The rapid growth indicates that QR payments are becoming an increasingly important part of Nepal’s digital economy, particularly for everyday retail transactions and other low-value payments.
