The Melamchi Water Supply Development Committee has issued a tender to construct a new water treatment plant in Sundarijal, aimed at increasing water distribution capacity in the Kathmandu Valley by an additional 255 million liters per day. Companies interested in the project have 45 days to submit their applications, with a technical evaluation set to follow in two months.

The plant will be built with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and ADB approval is required after the technical evaluation. Once approved, financial proposals will be reviewed, and the contract will be finalized.

Rajendra Prasad Pant, Senior Divisional Engineer at the committee, confirmed that the contract is expected to be awarded within six months. Construction of the plant is estimated to take three years, with the awarded company responsible for the design phase, which will take at least three months. The total estimated cost of the project is around NPR 7 billion.

Currently, 170 million liters of Melamchi water is being distributed in the valley, though the treatment plant has the capacity to process up to 510 million liters. However, distribution is limited to one-third of that capacity due to the plant’s current infrastructure limitations.
