Kathmandu, May 16: The Tilganga-Tamraganga road has been shut down in order to avoid any damage to the significance of the Pashupati area, that stands as an open museum of cultural heritage.
The road has been shut down as per the directive of the UNESCO and the Supreme Court order, says a statement issued today by member-secretary of Pashupati Area Development Trust Dr Pradip Dhakal. The Pashupati area is home to more than 500 temples and shrines of religious, cultural and historical perspective.
The UNESCO head office had communicated to the Government of Nepal on May 11, 2012 to shut down the road or risk removal of the area from the world heritage list. Likewise, in response to a case filed, the apex court had issued a mandamus order, which led the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation to make repeated communication to the PADT to shut down the road, reads the statement.
