Kathmandu, June 3 : Two new parking bays at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) will come into operation from June 5 (Wednesday), according to media reports. Such bays, which are constructed at the eastern side of the TIA, will be used for accommodating normal flights. They have capacity to accommodate two wide-body aircraft and one ATR-72 plane.
The newly built remote parking bays are expected to ensure a safe parking area for those aircraft carrying explosive materials or for hijacked planes. They together boast of the total investment of Rs 470 million. Their construction works were started two years back under the TIA’s graduation project.
With the construction of the two latest parking bays, the total number of such bays at the country’s sole international airport has reached 11.
The congestion problems at the TIA have been creating unwarranted hassles to the passengers like flight delay. But now with the new parking bays in operations, such problems are expected to mitigate.
