A total of 68,743 vehicles were imported through the Birgunj border point during the last fiscal year, according to Chief Customs Administrator Deepak Lamichhane of the Birgunj Customs Office.
These included assembled and unassembled fuel-powered motorcycles to large construction vehicles like cranes and mixers. Vehicle imports are the second-largest source of customs revenue at this checkpoint.
From fuel-powered vehicles alone, NPR 17.31 billion in revenue was collected in the last fiscal year.
Key figures from vehicle imports through Birgunj in FY 2080/81:
- 50,291 unassembled motorcycles valued at NPR 6.60 billion were imported, generating NPR 6.31 billion in revenue.
- 1,454 chassis for buses and trucks, worth NPR 2.94 billion, were brought in.
- 912 jeeps, cars, and vans powered by fuel were imported, totaling NPR 2.01 billion in value.
- 5,735 tractors and trailers worth NPR 1.37 billion entered through the checkpoint.
- 417 fuel-powered buses worth NPR 1.11 billion were also imported.
- 139 concrete mixer trucks, worth NPR 710 million, were recorded.
- 312 trucks and mini trucks valued at NPR 740 million were brought in.
- 4,646 motorcycles worth NPR 433.1 million were imported separately.
Additionally, 2,337 electric vehicles of various types were imported via Birgunj, with a total value of NPR 1.64 billion, from which the customs office collected NPR 1.80 billion in revenue.
