The government has re-appointed Kulman Ghising as the managing director of NEA after he completed his four-year term in August last year. The cabinet meeting on Monday decided to make Ghising the managing director, the cabinet office informed the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation on Tuesday. The ministry is also preparing to issue an appointment letter to Ghising on Wednesday itself.

The then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli did not agree to reappoint Ghising, who played a leading role in ending load shedding in Nepal. However, as soon as the new government was formed, an agreement was reached between Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-Maoist Central Committee Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Minister for Energy, Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Pampha Bhusal. According to a ministry source, the current leadership of NEA has not been able to move ahead with many projects started during Ghising’s previous tenure and the government has agreed to give Ghising another chance.

As per the proposal of Minister Bhusal, incumbent Hitendra Dev Shakya has been sent to the Water and Energy Commission as its secretary for a four-year term as the secretary-equivalent official.

During his previous tenure, Ghising was appraised for ending the problem of load shedding for good and raised the NEA to make a profit. The general public, thus, welcomed his reappointment.
