After a six-year hiatus, Indian low-cost carrier SpiceJet has resumed its regular Delhi-Kathmandu-Delhi flight service. On Saturday morning, a SpiceJet Boeing 737-800 carrying 140 passengers landed at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, according to Banney Shrestha, Commercial Director of Himalaya Global Travel Services, the airline’s official General Sales Agent (GSA).
The return flight to Delhi carried 172 passengers. SpiceJet has applied for permission from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) to operate 14 flights per week, although it will begin with seven weekly commercial flights.
Previously represented by Zenith Travel, SpiceJet’s renewed presence on the route is expected to intensify competition among existing operators—Nepal Airlines, Air India, and IndiGo—potentially leading to more competitive fares. Currently, Air India operates four daily flights, IndiGo two, and Nepal Airlines one.
SpiceJet, established in 1984, is India’s sixth-largest airline as of 2024. The carrier serves 60 domestic and 13 international destinations, and its Kathmandu-Delhi route will be operated using its 189-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
