The Department of Commerce, Supply, and Consumer Protection (DoCSCP) has called on citizens to report any suspicious or illegal activities related to cooking gas (LPG) distribution by using the toll-free number 1137. This appeal comes in response to growing concerns over black marketing and hoarding during a period of international supply shortages.
Recently, authorities have uncovered instances where LPG was either sold at excessively high prices or deliberately withheld from the market. Although the Nepal Oil Corporation has introduced the sale of half-filled cylinders to help manage supply, the shortage continues to affect consumers.
The department has warned that anyone found engaging in unfair trade practices will face strict penalties under the Consumer Protection Act, 2075. The hotline is accessible nationwide, enabling the public to report irregularities from anywhere in the country.
To tackle artificial scarcity and illegal distribution, the DoCSCP has intensified inspections across various regions. Any violations are addressed promptly, with legal action taken against those responsible.
In one such case, Shreeram Gas Industry was fined Rs 300,000 after officials discovered 6,377 cylinders, each weighing 14.2 kilograms, concealed in a warehouse in Harisiddhi, Lalitpur.
The department has reiterated that all LPG producers and distributors must comply with regulations and refrain from unlawful practices, particularly during times of increased demand.
