Kathmandu, April 30: The government has decided to continue the Ban on sugar import that was in place till April 13 until is extended to July 16.
The very decision contradicts with Prime Minister Oli’s statement that came a week back accusing the sugar mills of “deceiving” him into imposing the quantitative restriction on import of sugar.
On April 14, the government put in place a ban on the sugar import exceeding a total quantity of 94,900 tons was restricted. Given that sugar of that quantity has already been imported, sugar imports will be stopped.
Consumer activists have lamented that the government is caving in to sugar mills’ unwarranted pressure to restrict imports which prompted price hike immediately after the imports came to a halt.
