Preliminary insurance claims filed following the devastating August 26 Bhotekoshi River flood have exceeded Rs 25.87 billion, according to the Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA).

As of August 31, 15 insurance companies had reported receiving claims totaling Rs 25.8735 billion. Oriental Insurance Company recorded the highest volume of claims, with eight insured parties seeking compensation of around Rs 13 billion.

United Ajod Insurance received claims worth Rs 4.97 billion from 38 insured parties, followed by Sanima GIC with Rs 2.10 billion from 102 parties. Siddhartha Premier Insurance reported claims totaling Rs 1.88 billion from 67 insured parties, while Shikhar Insurance received Rs 1.87 billion in claims from 127 parties.

Other insurers also reported substantial claims. Himalayan Everest Insurance received claims worth Rs 640 million, while Neco Insurance reported Rs 510 million in claims. Sagarmatha Lumbini, Nepal Insurance and IGI Prudential also reported significant losses.

Engineering and contractor risk insurance accounted for the largest share of claims, with 52 insured parties filing preliminary claims worth more than Rs 20 billion. Property insurance claims totaled Rs 2.34 billion from 113 parties, while motor insurance claims reached Rs 1.55 billion from 313 parties.

Similarly, transport insurance claims stood at Rs 890 million, while claims under other insurance categories totaled Rs 520 million. Four health insurance claims worth Rs 41.6 million were also reported.

The NIA said the figures are based on preliminary assessments, and the final amount of compensation will be determined only after detailed damage assessments and verification of individual claims.
