The construction of a 220 kV substation in Udipur, Besishahar Municipality, Lamjung, under the Marsyangdi Corridor 220 kV Transmission Line Project, has been completed.
This substation, utilizing Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) technology, features 220/132 kV, 160 MVA and 132/33 kV, 50 MVA power transformers. The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) confirmed that all equipment, including the power transformer, has been successfully tested.
Additionally, the 132 kV substation is now operational. As per the power purchase agreement between NEA and Himalayan Power Partner, 27 MW from the Dordi Khola Hydropower Project is connected to this substation.
The Dordi Corridor 132 kV double circuit transmission line, built to transport electricity from the Dordi area in Lamjung, will now link to this substation. While construction took some time, electricity from the Dordi Khola Hydropower and the Dordi Corridor Transmission line was initially redirected to the Middle-Marsyangdi power plant’s switchyard.
With the substation now complete, the Dordi Corridor Transmission line will connect directly, allowing for reliable electricity supply to the switchyard of Middle Marsyangdi.
NEA Managing Director Kul Man Ghising stated that local electricity distribution through the 33 kV line from the Udipur substation would enhance reliability and quality of supply in the region.
He also mentioned ongoing efforts to complete the 220 kV transmission line from Udipur to Bharatpur in Chitwan via Markichoke in Tanahun by mid-May 2025. This project is prioritized to improve the supply of electricity generated by local hydropower projects.
The Marsyangdi Corridor 220 kV transmission line project aims to connect electricity from Marsyangdi and its tributaries to the national grid, with a transmission capacity of around 1,600 megawatts. A 113 km double circuit transmission line from Bharatpur to Dharapani is currently under construction, divided into three packages.
The estimated project cost is approximately Rs. 16 billion, funded by the government and a concessional loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB).
