Construction of three hydropower projects with a total capacity of 155 megawatts has begun in Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-4, Mudi, in Myagdi district. The projects are being developed on the Myagdi River, which originates from the foothills of Mt. Dhaulagiri.
The three projects under construction are the 53.5-megawatt Upper Myagdi-I, the 65-megawatt Myagdi Khola Hydropower Project, and the 37-megawatt Upper Myagdi Hydropower Project.
According to Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality Chairman Prem Prasad Pun, these are among the eight hydropower projects registered along the Myagdi River and its tributaries, Gurja and Mudi rivers. Construction work has progressed on these three, marking a significant step in the district’s hydropower development.
The Upper Myagdi-I Hydropower Project, which will have a dam in Khamla of Mudi and a powerhouse in Malika Rural Municipality-7, Bharbang, has completed access road construction. The project has now begun work on the tunnel and dam infrastructure, according to Project Chief Jyoti Kumar KC.
Similarly, the 65-megawatt Myagdi Khola Hydropower Project, which will feature a dam in Mudi and a powerhouse in Jeltung, has already built an access road to the powerhouse. Preparations are underway to construct the necessary infrastructure and tunnel, connecting the powerhouse in Jeltung to Naura, located six kilometers away. Project Chief KC mentioned that efforts are being made to proceed simultaneously with tunnel construction and the expansion of the access road from the powerhouse to the dam.
The 37-megawatt Upper Myagdi Hydropower Project in Mudikai has also completed its access road construction and is preparing to begin tunnel construction. Managing Director of the project, Jit Bahadur Gharti, confirmed that the next phase of work will focus on tunneling.
The development of these hydropower projects has also improved road access in remote settlements, including Khamla, Naura, Khibang, and Bagar, bringing much-needed infrastructure to these areas.
