Kathmandu, August 10– A high-level business delegation from Myanmar has on August 9 met with the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) officials in the capital. The visiting delegation is led by a senior industrialist of Myanmar, U Ko Ko Latt.
According to a press release issued by the CNI, during the meeting, the visiting delegation team expressed willingness to promote the bilateral trade and business relations between Nepal and Myanmar. ‘They also emphasized that the business fraternities between the two countries shall work together to promote the tourism sector in particular.”
Since Lumbini, Nepal is a birthplace of Gautam Buddha, around 25,000 tourists from the Buddhist country Myanmar are visiting this place annually.
U Ko Ko and his delegation members were of the view that if direct air flights between the two countries are conducted, it would help boost not only tourism but also other business activities between them.
During the meeting, Hari Bhakta Sharma, president, CNI, pointed out that the Nepali economy as a whole can reap benefits by bolstering the business ties with Myanmar that has been witnessing rapid economic growth after a great political change that took place there some years back. “Hydropower, solar energy, agro processing medicine and engineering are some of the viable areas in which the two countries can collaborate and cooperate for their mutual benefits,” he said.
Nepal has been suffering trade deficit with Myanmar continuously. The former exported goods worth Rs 4.4 million to the latter while it imported goods worth Rs 1.64 billion in the fiscal year 2015/16.
