Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) announced that the country earned a net profit of Rs 4.57 billion from electricity trade in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2024/25.
According to a commitment letter issued by NEA Executive Director Hitendra Dev Shakya on the authority’s 40th anniversary, Nepal generated Rs 17.47 billion in revenue through electricity exports to India. However, imports worth Rs 12.9 billion during the same period reduced the overall profit.
Expanding Regional Power Trade
Shakya highlighted that Nepal has recently received clearance from the Government of India to export 1,010 megawatts of electricity generated from 30 hydropower plants. Additionally, Nepal began exporting 40 megawatts of power to Bangladesh last fiscal year, further expanding its regional energy trade.
Strengthening Transmission Infrastructure
To boost cross-border electricity exchange, NEA is advancing key transmission line projects:
- 400 kV Inaruwa–New Purnia line (with India)
- 400 kV Dodhara (Lamki)–Bareilly line (with India)
- 220 kV Chilime–Rasuwagadhi–Kerung line (with China)
These projects are vital to Nepal’s ambition of exporting 15,000 MW of power by 2025 and fulfilling the commitment to import 10,000 MW from India over the next decade.
