Kathmandu, September 17 : Nepal has proposed to activate the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) economic mechanism to improve the economies of the SAARC member countries seriously hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The very proposition was made at the 15th Informal Meeting of SAARC Finance Ministers, which was held virtually on Wednesday (September 16) on the theme of ‘COVID-19 and South Asian Economies’.
During the meeting, representing Nepal, Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, said that the mutual collaboration and cooperation among the member states to leverage their respective resources to the optimum can help cushion the negative economic impacts of the pandemic on the SAARC region.
Speaking on the same occassion, SAARC Secretary-General Esala Weerakoon said the SAARC Secretariat was committed to coordinating among the member states for recovery of the South Asian economy. —
