The Department of Electricity Development (DoED) issued survey permits to 99 hydropower projects with a combined installed capacity of 3,211 MW during fiscal year (FY) 2025/26, reflecting continued momentum in Nepal’s renewable energy sector.
According to the department, survey permits were also granted to seven solar energy projects with a total capacity of 311 MW, supporting the government’s efforts to diversify the country’s energy mix.
In the transmission sector, the DoED approved survey permits for 179 circuit kilometers of 220 kV, 270 circuit kilometers of 132 kV, and 132 circuit kilometers of 33 kV transmission line projects.
During the fiscal year, the department also issued production licenses to 29 hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 1,857 MW, along with three solar projects totaling 31 MW.
The DoED collected approximately Rs 3.5 billion in royalties from the energy sector during the year, with the revenue shared among provincial and local governments.
To date, Nepal has granted production licenses to 264 hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 12,336 MW, while 10 solar projects with a total capacity of 74.6 MW have also received production permits.
The department has additionally approved the construction of 1,097 circuit kilometers of 400 kV, 656 circuit kilometers of 220 kV, 1,060 circuit kilometers of 132 kV, and 337 circuit kilometers of 33 kV transmission lines, underscoring ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s electricity transmission infrastructure.
